Different Types Of Speech
Different types of speech, according to Fisher, D & Torbert, W.(1995). Personal and organizational transformation: The true challenge of continual improvement.New York; McGraw-Hill. (will be discussed in class):
- Advocacy - proposing or persuading, this is the preferred type of speech by many, but is only a small segment of how one might "frame" a topic
Framing - selecting components of an issue to discuss, review or critique.Almost all conversations and subjects, are framed by their nature, but this is an explicit choice to select components
- Inquiry - asking questions without a bias, seeking to define and clarify a conversation, issue or problem
- Illustrating - illustrating an issue is a very effective way to persuade.Illustrations come from metaphors, stories, jokes, and analogies. One very important illustration that was made recently was done by Allen Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve:
During a presentation to Wall Street Traders this summer he made the following paraphrased comment:
America is facing a crisis of large proportions. Its workforce is unprepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly technology based economy. As such I encourage all employers to find ways to encourage their employees to return to school, to get more education. The reason they should do this? It's the same reason you buy fire insurance on your house, before a fire, you don't wait until after your house burned down.America should not wait any longer to buy its insurance for success-the re-education of American workers.
